It seems you are pretty knowledgeable about these type of scams. It is instructive for us here in China to remember that these sort of cases do not only happen here. I don’t know why we tend to think that way, but I certainly make that mistake from time to time. Perhaps it is a bit of cultural arrogance on the part of Westerners.

I hadn’t heard about the case you mention, but that would seem like a great area to be in if you didn’t want anyone to look into your qualifications. Immigration applicants are presumably even less likely to vet their lawyers than business men and women are. Amazing that a local bar association was fooled as well.

In the CDE case, which recently had everyone in this area abuzz, he was scheduled to give a talk at an AmCham event this month. And it looked like he would, until his unfortunate interview was published, and more importantly, read and believed.

You are so right! Perhaps you also heard about the fake immigration lawyer in New York that was recently busted after being ‘in practice’ since 1992!
